Grow with AI: your 30-day plan

When you finish, you can follow a four-week plan and describe your AI skills honestly.

Skills that gain value

As more people try chatbots for support, skilled human counselors stay essential. Strengths that grow include deep listening, cultural humility, trauma-informed practice, crisis work, ethical reasoning and helping clients think critically about the tools they use.

Some administrative work will shrink. Use freed time for the work only you can do, and for learning how clients are using AI in their lives.

Weeks 1 and 2: safe basics

Week 1: Read your ethics code and employer policy with AI in mind. Practice with templates only. Create a welcome email and a general handout draft. Keep a log of prompts and edits.

Week 2: Practice checking. Review each output for harm, bias and tone. Ask the tool, “What could be harmful or too general here?” Then use your own judgment.

Weeks 3 and 4: a habit

Week 3: Build a reusable prompt for a task you repeat, like reminders or CE study questions. Save it with notes on what to check.

Week 4: Talk with a supervisor or peer about AI. Share your guardrails and ask what theirs are. Write down one use you will not try.

Describing your skills honestly

A resume line: “Use approved AI tools to draft administrative templates and psychoeducation handouts, with clinical review and strict client confidentiality.” Avoid saying AI performs therapy or notes for you.

In an interview, lead with ethics. Clinics want people who protect clients and still work efficiently.

Talking with your supervisor or clients

With a supervisor: “I would like to try an approved tool for admin templates. What does our policy say?” With clients, if asked: “I may use software to help draft general materials, but I do not put your information into AI tools.”

Clear, honest statements build trust. If you are not sure of an answer, say you will find out.

Practice now

  1. Write a four-week plan with one action and date per week.
  2. Write two sentences you could say to a client who asks if you use AI.

Use any AI assistant you have. Do not paste private, client or patient information into it.

Check yourself

1. Which skill gains value as chatbots spread?

2. What belongs in week 2?

3. What is an honest answer to a client who asks about AI use?

Ask the AI tutor
