Lesson 2 of 4 · about 5 min

Your first AI wins: 5 everyday tasks

When you finish, you can run five low-risk office tasks with AI and check each one.

Stuck? Ask the AI tutor

Win 1: Recall and reminder templates

Weak prompt: “Write a reminder.” Strong prompt: “Write a warm, 50-word message for adult patients reminding them to schedule a routine checkup. Placeholders for name and phone. No health advice.”

Check for: pressure or guilt in the wording, anything that sounds like a medical claim, and missing contact details. Test the message in your approved system and read it aloud.

Win 2: Aftercare outline for dentist review

Weak prompt: “Write aftercare instructions.” Strong prompt: “Draft an outline for an aftercare handout for adults after a routine filling. Grade 6 level. Headings only with short sentences. Leave the ‘when to call us’ section blank for the dentist.”

Check for: clinical advice that crept in, doses, or anything that conflicts with your dentist’s protocol. Hand the draft to the dentist to edit and approve. Never hand it out without that review.

Win 3: Replying to a review

Weak prompt: “Reply to this review and explain what happened.” That invites private details. Strong prompt: “Write a calm 60-word reply to a public review that thanks the person, does not confirm they are a patient, includes no treatment details and invites them to call the office.”

Check for: any hint of a patient’s identity or treatment. Privacy rules apply even when the patient posted publicly. Keep replies general and kind.

Win 4: Checklists and training

Weak prompt: “Make an opening checklist.” Strong prompt: “Create a 12-step opening checklist for a dental front desk with check boxes. Leave placeholders for our software and sterilization steps, which come from our manual.”

Check for: invented safety or infection-control steps. Those come from your office manual and your regulators, not from a chatbot. Use the AI for layout and wording only.

Win 5: Explaining insurance terms

Weak prompt: “Explain my patient’s insurance.” That includes private data. Strong prompt: “Explain deductible, annual maximum and co-pay in plain words with a simple everyday comparison for each. Under 120 words.”

Check for: claims about how a specific plan works. AI does not know any individual plan. Keep it general, then verify specifics through the plan’s own documents.

Practice now

  1. Choose one win and write a weak and strong prompt. Run both and write what changed.
  2. Ask AI for a review reply and then delete anything that could point to one patient.

Use any AI assistant you have. Do not paste private, client or patient information into it.

Check yourself

1. What should a public review reply avoid?

2. Where do infection-control steps come from?

3. Why keep insurance explanations general?
