Lesson 4 of 4 · about 5 min
Grow with AI: your 30-day plan
When you finish, you can follow a four-week plan and present AI skills in your portfolio honestly.
Stuck? Ask the AI tutorSkills that gain value
Strategy, brand thinking, typography, layout systems, motion basics, accessibility, art direction and client communication gain value as images get cheap. Designers who can explain why a design works, and who can build systems of logos, colors and templates that teams use consistently, remain hard to replace.
Specialize if you can: packaging, wayfinding, editorial, data visualization, or design for a language and culture you know deeply. Taste is built by looking at a lot of good work and by making things by hand.
Brief questions and low-risk drafts
Week one: play with image and text tools on personal projects only. Write ten prompts, save the best three, and note what failed. Keep a small notebook of flaws you see in generated images. This trains your eye.
Week two: use AI on a mock client brief. Sharpen the brief, ask for directions in words, generate concept sketches, then build one direction by hand. Write a short note about which steps saved time and which wasted it.
Build a process you can show
Week three: complete a small identity or poster project from start to finish. Use AI only where it helps, and finish the final artwork with real type and clean files. Run an accessibility check and a handoff checklist.
Week four: assemble a portfolio piece that shows your process, including sketches, rejected ideas and the final system. Add a short, honest note on where AI was used. Share it with two peers or potential clients and ask for feedback.
Portfolio and conversations
In your portfolio, show craft and thinking, not only outputs. A line such as, “Used AI for early concept exploration; final design, typography and production by me,” is clear and honest. Do not present generated images as hand illustration.
With clients, focus on outcomes: clearer briefs, faster options, more time for the strategic parts. Be upfront about rights and revisions. A designer who communicates well and delivers dependable files is easy to hire again.
Practice now
- Choose one personal project and plan how you would use AI for exploration and keep the final work handmade. Write the plan in five steps.
- Draft a portfolio caption that honestly explains the role of AI in one piece.
