Lesson 1 of 4 · about 5 min
How AI is changing the work of a nonprofit team
When you finish, you can map your team's tasks into AI-drafts, AI-assists-you-decide, and stays-human.
Stuck? Ask the AI tutorA small team doing many jobs
Nonprofit teams often do the work of many departments at once. One person may write grants, run events, answer the phone, update the website, manage volunteers and report to the board. Time is short, and the stakes are people's lives and community trust.
That is why AI is attractive, and why it needs care. List what your team did last month. Mark each task as writing, organizing, communicating, serving people or deciding. AI mostly helps with the first three.
Tasks AI can draft or speed up
First drafts of grant sections, donor thank-you notes, newsletters, volunteer messages, social posts, meeting agendas, survey summaries and report outlines are common wins. It can also rewrite the same message at different reading levels or for different audiences.
A tired team can use drafts to get unstuck. But a draft is only a start. Funders and donors read for truth and voice. Your stories, your community and your details are what make your writing yours.
Where AI assists and you decide
Choosing which funders to approach, deciding what to promise, shaping a program design, interpreting feedback and deciding how to represent participants all need judgment, ethics and context. AI can suggest ideas or questions. It cannot know your community's history or your relationships.
Impact claims are a special risk. A tool may happily write that your program “transformed hundreds of lives” if that sounds good. Only claim what your records support.
Tasks that stay human
Sitting with a person in crisis, building trust with community leaders, deciding who is helped first, handling a complaint, leading volunteers, listening to the board and being accountable to the people you serve stay human. So does your mission.
Some routine writing and admin will speed up. Organizations that do well will use the saved time to be more present with the people they serve, and to keep their promises. That is a shift worth working toward.
Practice now
- List your team's tasks from last month and mark each: AI drafts, AI assists and I decide, stays human.
- Write down three impact claims your organization makes and where the evidence is kept.
Use any AI assistant you have. Do not paste private, client or patient information into it.
