Grow with AI: your 30-day plan

When you finish, you can follow a four-week plan and describe your AI skills honestly to clients.

Skills that gain value

Live event work, documentary storytelling, trusted portraiture, direction of people, lighting, sound, and a recognizable personal style gain value when images can be generated cheaply. So do verifiable authenticity and relationships. Many clients will pay more for someone they trust to be in the room.

Video skills that combine photo, sound and short-form storytelling open doors. Business skills matter too: clear contracts, pricing based on value and usage, and reliable delivery.

Start with admin tasks, not client files

Week one: use text tools for admin only. Draft a questionnaire, a delivery email, a shot list and captions from verified facts. Time how long each task takes and note what you had to fix. Keep client files out of unapproved tools.

Week two: try AI-assisted sorting and tagging on a personal set of photos. Compare your own cull with the tool's. Test one retouching feature, and write down where it helped and where it changed the truth.

Label, disclose and keep originals

Week three: complete a small paid or practice job using the whole workflow. Plan with AI, shoot your way, edit with care, and deliver with a clear note about methods. Ask the client what they valued most.

Week four: update your portfolio and website. Write a short statement on your approach to authenticity and AI. Contact three past clients with a useful, honest offer, such as a seasonal session. Choose one craft skill, such as lighting or sound, to practice for the next month.

Portfolio and conversations

In your portfolio, show real work and behind-the-scenes proof, such as frames from the day or short clips of you working. Say plainly where AI helped: “AI-assisted sorting and caption drafts; all photography and final edits by me.” Label any generated images.

With clients, talk about trust, speed and what you will and will not alter. People are more careful about what is real than they used to be, and a photographer who is open about process stands out.

Practice now

  1. Write a three-sentence statement of your approach to authenticity and AI for your website.
  2. Plan a four-week schedule with one admin task, one editing test, one full job and one portfolio update.

Use any AI assistant you have. Do not paste private, client or patient information into it.

Check yourself

1. What gains value as generated images become common?

2. What is a safe first use of AI in week one?

3. How should you describe AI use in a portfolio?
