Lesson 5 of 5 · about 5 min
Activity settings and privacy
When you finish, you can find your Gemini activity settings and choose what to share.
Stuck? Ask the AI tutorWhere your settings live
Gemini and your Google account have settings for saving activity, reviewing past chats, deleting items and managing connected apps. Some settings affect whether conversations may be reviewed or used to improve products. Options differ by account type and region and can change, so read Google's current pages and your settings screen.
Open your activity controls once, slowly. Decide what you are comfortable with. Set a routine, such as reviewing and clearing old chats on a schedule that suits you.
What to keep out of chats
Do not enter passwords, card or bank numbers, government ID numbers, or private details about other people. Replace real details with placeholders like [customer] when you can. Assume anything you type is data you are choosing to share with a company's systems.
In health, law, finance, education, counseling, insurance and government work, never put patient, client, student or citizen identifying information into a consumer AI tool unless your employer has approved that tool for that data. Follow employer policy and your regulator's rules. Health-privacy laws such as HIPAA in the US are one example of rules that may apply.
Work and school accounts
If your account belongs to a company or school, an administrator may set the rules and may have access to activity. Features and data handling can be different from a personal account. Ask what is allowed before you rely on it.
Do not use a personal account for confidential work material just because it is convenient. That can break policy and put people at risk.
Worked example: tidy up
A freelancer in Colombia finds old chats containing client names. She deletes them, turns off access to apps she does not need, and starts a rule: use placeholders for names. She tells clients she uses AI tools for drafting and never shares their private files.
A short review took minutes and left her safer. Do the same: look, trim and set a habit. Privacy is a routine, not a one-time fix.
Practice now
- Open your Google account's activity controls related to Gemini. Write down what is saved, for how long if shown, and what you will change.
- Review the apps connected to Gemini and turn off one you do not need.
Use any AI assistant you have. Do not paste private, client or patient information into it.
