Lesson 1 of 4 · about 5 min
How AI is changing the work of a sales rep
When you finish, you can sort your sales tasks into what AI can draft, what AI can assist, and what stays human.
Stuck? Ask the AI tutorSelling is still about trust
Buyers get more messages than ever, many written by tools, and many sound the same. People notice. Customers still buy from those they trust, who understand their problem and who tell the truth about what the product can and cannot do.
AI changes the surrounding work: research, drafting, note-taking, reporting. Some of that work used to fill a rep’s day and may take much less time now. What remains valuable is the relationship and the judgment.
Tasks AI can draft or speed up
Summarizing a company’s public website before a call. Drafting a first outreach message you will personalize. Turning call notes into a follow-up email. Producing a proposal outline. Organizing your week. Creating practice objections to rehearse.
All of these start from information you provide and end in text you review. The best habit is to treat the draft as your assistant’s work: useful, quick and in need of your edit.
Tasks where AI assists and you decide
Choosing which accounts deserve your time. Deciding what to say to a buyer who has gone quiet. Setting a price or a discount within company rules. Judging whether a customer’s need really fits your product. A tool can list options, but you carry the relationship and the commitment.
Be careful with any tool that scores leads or predicts which deals will close. The scores can be wrong or biased, and they can push you toward easy sales instead of right ones. Use them as one input among several.
Tasks that stay human, and where value grows
Listening for what a buyer is not saying. Building trust over months. Walking away from a poor-fit deal. Handling a complaint with honesty. Solving a problem across a customer’s teams. Telling the truth when the truth costs a sale.
Consultative skills grow in value: asking good questions, understanding the customer’s business, and connecting it to what you offer. Reps who add real insight and who protect customers’ data and trust will stand out among a flood of automated messages.
Practice now
- List the ten tasks that take most of your week. Label each D (AI can draft), A (AI assists, I decide) or H (stays human). Notice which H tasks are your strongest.
- Pick one D task, such as call prep. Use public information only and a free AI tool, and compare the result with how you normally prepare.
Use any AI assistant you have. Do not paste private, client or patient information into it.

Ask the AI tutor
