Lesson 3 of 5 · about 5 min
Cover letters that sound like you
When you finish, you can write a short cover letter that is clear, true and personal.
Stuck? Ask the AI tutorWhat a cover letter does
A cover letter tells the reader why you want this job and why you fit, in a few short paragraphs. It is not a repeat of your resume. It connects your story to their needs.
Many AI letters sound alike: "I am passionate about leveraging my skills." Readers notice. Your goal is a letter that could only come from you.
Give AI your voice
Before drafting, tell the AI how you speak: "I write in short, plain sentences, warm but not gushing." Paste a few lines you wrote naturally, such as an email to a friend. Ask the AI to match that style.
Then supply real facts: why this company, one achievement, one reason you care. Weak: "Write a cover letter for a teaching assistant job." Strong: "Write a cover letter for a teaching assistant job at a primary school in Leeds. I volunteered for two years at a library reading club. I like helping shy children read aloud."
Edit until it is yours
Read the draft aloud. Cut words you would never say. Replace vague claims with specific examples. Add one detail only you know, such as what struck you on the school's website.
Keep it short. Most letters work well at a page or less. Always check the company and person names, and make sure every claim is true.
A worked example
Paulo, a delivery driver in São Paulo, applies to a dispatcher role. His first AI draft is full of buzzwords. He tells the AI: "Use plain words. Mention that I know every district route and that I helped new drivers learn them."
The new draft reads like him. He adds a line about why the company's local focus matters to him. The result is short, true and personal.
Practice now
- Write three sentences about why you want a job in your own words, then ask AI to expand them into a short letter in your voice.
- Read your letter aloud and circle any phrase you would never say. Rewrite it.
Use any AI assistant you have. Do not paste private, client or patient information into it.
