Lesson 1 of 5 · about 5 min

Find your transferable skills

When you finish, you can turn past work into a clear list of skills a new employer needs.

Stuck? Ask the AI tutor

You know more than a job title says

A job title is a label. Underneath are tasks, and tasks show skills. A shop assistant manages customers, handles complaints, tracks stock and works under pressure. A parent returning to work plans, budgets, negotiates and teaches. A soldier or farmer or driver also carries skills that many other jobs need.

Skills that carry from one job to another are called transferable skills. AI can help you see them, if you give it real details.

Give AI the raw facts

Weak prompt: "What skills do I have?" The AI will guess. Strong prompt: "I worked as a bus driver for eight years in Kampala. I handled daily schedules, helped confused passengers, kept the vehicle safe, and trained two new drivers. List the skills these tasks show."

The answer might include time management, customer service, safety awareness and coaching. Check the list. Keep what is true, drop what is not.

Match skills to jobs

Next, paste a job post and ask the AI which parts of it match your skills and which parts do not. This reveals your gaps early. You can then decide: learn a little, show a related example, or choose a closer job.

Good questions: "Which requirements do I clearly meet?" "Which ones do I only partly meet?" "What small project could show I can learn the rest?"

A worked example

Elena, a hospital cleaner in Bucharest, wants an office job. She lists her tasks: following strict checklists, handling cleaning supplies safely, working a rotating shift, reporting problems to supervisors. The AI points to reliability, safety procedures, and reporting.

Elena turns those into resume lines about following procedures and reporting issues, and applies to building maintenance and facilities coordination roles. She added nothing she had not done.

Practice now

  1. List your last three jobs or roles with five real tasks each. Ask an AI tool to name the skills they show.
  2. Pick a job you want. Paste its post and ask which requirements you meet clearly, partly or not at all.

Use any AI assistant you have. Do not paste private, client or patient information into it.

Check yourself

1. Which prompt gets the most useful skill list?

2. What should you do with the AI's skill list?

3. Why ask the AI which requirements you only partly meet?

Ask the AI tutor

Ask anything about this lesson, in any language. The tutor is an AI: it can be wrong, and it never needs your personal details.
