Lesson 2 of 5 · about 5 min
Tailor your resume honestly
When you finish, you can adjust your resume to a job post using true statements only.
Stuck? Ask the AI tutorOne resume, many versions
Employers prefer resumes that speak to their job. Tailoring means choosing which true facts to put first and using words that match the job post. It does not mean adding things you have not done.
Keep a master resume with everything. For each job, copy it and trim to the parts that matter most.
Use the post's language
Read the job post and mark repeated words, such as scheduling, reporting, customers or safety. If those words truthfully describe your experience, use them in your bullets. Many employers use software that scans for matching terms, so familiar words help.
Weak bullet: "Did customer stuff." Strong bullet: "Resolved customer complaints in person and by phone, usually on the same day." Do not add numbers you cannot back up.
What AI should not do
AI can invent. If you ask it to "make my resume impressive," it may add skills, tools or results you never had. Never keep a claim you cannot explain in an interview. A false claim can cost you the job later, even after you are hired.
A safer prompt: "Suggest rewording for these bullets using the job post's language. Use only the facts I gave. If something is missing, ask me instead of filling it in."
A worked example
Thabo, a warehouse supervisor in Durban, applies to a logistics coordinator job. He pastes the post and his bullets. The AI suggests changing "watched the loading dock" to "coordinated daily loading schedules with drivers and warehouse staff."
Thabo checks it: true, he did that. He keeps it. The AI also suggests adding experience with a software system he has never used. He leaves that out and instead writes that he learns new systems quickly, with a real example.
Practice now
- Take a real job post and your resume. Ask AI to suggest rewording for three bullets using only true facts, then edit.
- Mark one claim on your resume you could not explain in an interview. Fix or remove it.
Use any AI assistant you have. Do not paste private, client or patient information into it.
