Checking output and building good habits

When you finish, you can use a simple checking routine and a few habits that keep your Copilot use honest and useful.

Why checking is the job

Copilot, like any assistant built on a language model, can state wrong things with confidence. It can invent a detail, misread a table or miss the point of an email. The time you save drafting is time you should spend checking.

Make checking part of the workflow. A draft is not done when it appears. It is done when you have read it, verified facts and decided it is fit to send.

A five-point routine

First, facts: names, dates, numbers. Second, sources: did it use the right file or meeting? Third, tone: does it sound like you and suit the reader? Fourth, risk: does it promise, admit or decide something it should not? Fifth, privacy: does it include data the reader should not see?

Ask Copilot to help: "List every factual claim in this draft so I can verify each one." That turns a smooth paragraph into a checklist.

Worked example: a project update

Rodrigo in Lima asks Copilot to draft a project update from his notes. The draft says the work is on schedule. His notes only said one task was done. He changes the line to say exactly what is true and adds the risk he knows about.

Without checking, the update would have misled his manager. With checking, it was accurate. Tools do not carry responsibility. You do.

Grow your skill

Save prompts that work. Share them with teammates if allowed. Try one new use each week, in a low-risk task. Learn what Copilot is good at in your job and what it is not.

Be open about your use when asked. Say what the tool did and what you checked. That builds trust. Keep learning, because features and rules will keep changing. Check Microsoft's current help pages and your organization's guidance regularly.

Practice now

  1. Take any AI draft and ask for a list of its factual claims. Verify each one and note which were wrong or unsupported.
  2. Create a personal prompt list with five prompts that worked for you, and note what you changed each time.

Use any AI assistant you have. Do not paste private, client or patient information into it.
