Research features and image understanding

When you finish, you can use research tools and image questions while checking sources and details.

Research modes

Gemini can often search the web and, in some versions, run a longer research task that gathers many sources and writes a report. Availability depends on plan and region. These tools are good for getting oriented on a topic, comparing viewpoints and finding sources to read.

They are not a final authority. A long, confident report can still contain errors or lean on weak sources. Use it as a map, then visit the places on the map.

A source-checking routine

Open at least a few of the sources listed. Does the page say what the report claims? Is it from an organization you can judge, such as a government agency, university or well-known publication? Is it recent enough for your purpose?

Ask Gemini: "Which claims here are well supported, and which are weaker?" and "What would an expert disagree with?" Then write your own short summary in your words. If you cannot explain it, you have not understood it yet.

Understanding images

You can often upload or take a photo and ask Gemini about it. Read a sign in another language, describe a chart, identify the parts of a bicycle, or turn a whiteboard into a list. Ask directly: "Read the text in this picture and tell me what you are unsure about."

Image reading makes mistakes with small print, handwriting, poor light and unusual objects. Do not rely on it to identify plants, mushrooms or medicines for safety decisions. For those, ask a qualified person. Be careful with photos of other people. Do not upload their images without a good reason.

Worked example: a bus timetable

A traveler in Vietnam photographs a timetable written in a language they cannot read. They ask, "Translate this timetable into English as a table. Mark any entries you cannot read clearly." Gemini returns a table with two uncertain entries flagged.

The traveler checks those two with a local or at the station. They used the tool for what it does well and covered its weak spot with a human check.

Practice now

  1. Use a research or search feature on a topic you care about. Open three sources and mark one claim you could confirm and one you could not.
  2. Photograph a printed page or sign. Ask Gemini to read it, then compare line by line.

Use any AI assistant you have. Do not paste private, client or patient information into it.
