When you finish, you can follow a four-week plan and describe your AI skills honestly to an employer or client.

Skills that gain value

Audience research and listening. Strategy and positioning. Experiment design and honest measurement. Editing and taste. Brand voice stewardship. Community building. Ethics and compliance awareness. Knowing how to brief a tool and a human with equal clarity.

A strong portfolio piece in the future may not be ‘I wrote 100 posts’. It may be ‘I ran a test, learned something, and changed the plan’. Evidence of thinking is harder to fake than volume.

Your four-week plan

Week one: use AI for brainstorming only, such as headlines and angles, and keep a note of what you rejected and why. Week two: write a voice guide with phrases you would and would not use, and test it in three prompts. Week three: repurpose one piece of your own content and review facts line by line.

Week four: design a small test, such as two subject lines to two halves of a list, with a clear question and a time limit. Use AI to plan and summarize, not to decide. Write what you learned in three sentences. Keep your log honest, including failures.

Describing AI skills honestly

A good line: “Used AI to draft campaign briefs and email variations, then edited for voice and verified all claims; ran A/B tests and reported results.” Add real outcomes only if you can show them.

Avoid saying AI “created” your campaign. In interviews, talk about decisions: what you asked, what you rejected, what you changed. Hiring managers want to see your taste and judgment, and your respect for rules.

Talking to your manager or clients

Bring a pilot proposal: “I would like to use an approved tool to speed up first drafts and research summaries, with a claims check before anything publishes. Can we try it on one campaign?” Include how you will avoid private data and invented facts.

With clients, be clear about what AI helps with and what you personally review. Offer a short statement about your process. Clients who understand your safeguards are more likely to trust you with larger work.

Practice now

  1. Write a one-page voice guide for a real or imagined brand with five 'we say' and five 'we never say' phrases.
  2. Plan a small test with one question and one measure, and write what you would do with each possible result.

Use any AI assistant you have. Do not paste private, client or patient information into it.

Check yourself

1. What does a strong portfolio piece show in an AI era?

2. In a pilot proposal, which element builds trust?

3. What should an AI-use line on a resume avoid?
